"Alfred Gillett Trust","The internationally significant geology collection owned by the Trust offer a wealth of delights for those interested in the Lias of the immediate Street vicinity. The collection of marine reptiles amassed by the Victorian enthusiast Alfred Gillett (1814-1904) includes eighteen near-complete Ichthyosaurs, a plesiosaur and over 180 smaller specimens. It represents the once prolific fossil locality of the Blue Lias quarries of Street, Somerset, now closed and back-filled and rivals the major collections at the Natural History Museum and the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. In 1887 the collection formed the core of a small Geology Museum in Street, but since the museum's closure in 1948 the collection remained largely unstudied in storage. Now in the care of the Alfred Gillett Trust, the fossils are once again being made available for public access. Several pioneering palaeontologists were attracted to the village of Street in mid-Somerset during the 19th and 20th centuries because of the marine reptile fossils found in the quarries there. These included Henry De La Beche (1796-1855) and William Daniel Conybeare (1787-1857). Thomas Clark (1792-1864), a close relative of Alfred and a member of the local Clark family of shoemaking fame, may have collected ichthyosaur and plesiosaur specimens for Conybeare to study. Another local collector, the Rev. Thomas Hawkins (1810-1889), also made extensive use of the Street quarries. The collection is not on permanent public display, but visitors can view the fossils at the annual pop-up Sea Dragons of Street exhibition which are free to enter. However, groups may come and view the collection in store by prior arrangement for a fee. ",-2.7412375,51.1292954,"MUSEUM","https://alfredgilletttrust.org/collections/geological-collection/",""

They have been catalogued according to subject: Earth History, Natural History, and Human History. A selection can be seen in our Online Museum. The Mineral collection contains over 2,300 items. The Fossil collection contains over 5,700 items. Charles Moore (1814-1881) was a prominent geologist and collector who deposited his collection at the BRLSI from the 1854 onwards, it includes 32 complete and partial Ichthyosaurs and Plesiosaurs mounted in wooden frames. Over 5000 macro-fossils are housed in the Institution, approximately two-thirds of which were collected by Moore. Of international importance are an exquisitely preserved collection fish, crocodilomorphs, ichthyosaurs and cephalopods from the Upper Lias of Ilminster, Somerset.
Including the fossil and rock collection assembled by William Lonsdale (1794-1871), the Institution's first curator and later a highly respected secretary to the Geological Society of London. Among these are specimens originally arranged in a cabinet by William Smith. Other items include cave deposits from Banwell Cave and Wookey Hole on the Mendips, and from Kent's Cavern near Torquay. The Mineral Collection includes reference specimens of all the commoner minerals and many rarer ones. They were collected at worldwide locations but the collection is particularly strong in material from south west England. Most of these collecting sites, as with many of Charles Moore's fossil sites, are no longer accessible. Over 2300 specimens have been checked or redetermined by Mrs. S. "Buckinghamshire County Museum","There are around 6,000 rocks, fossils and minerals in the collection dating from 190 million to 10,000 years ago. During the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (195-65 million years ago) Buckinghamshire was mostly under the sea. As a result many of the fossils in the collection are of sea creatures from ammonites and belemnites to giant marine reptiles such as the Watermead Pliosaur. he Marsworth Ice Age collection was found at the former Pitstone cement works near Marsworth in the 1980s. As part of a controlled excavation around 1,600 fossil bones and teeth were found. These were dated to 200,000 years ago and have helped provide evidence for a previously unknown interglacial period in Britain. Our local rocks provide a record of past environments and the raw materials for many of Buckinghamshire's buildings. "Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery","Guernsey Museums & Galleries holds extensive collections from the island and the wider world. The pick of our objects are on show in the permanent galleries and others are brought out from time to time for temporary exhibitions. Our geological collection contains material from both the Lukis & Island Museum and the Guille-Allès Museum. The individual founders of these Guernsey institutions all had personal geological collections which reflects the popularity of the new science of geology in the nineteenth century. he particular strength of the Lukis Geological Collection lies in the local Guernsey specimens obtained from quarries no longer accessible but which were active in Lukis's lifetime. Quarries working the St Peter Port Gabbro in the vicinity of the Bouett exposed mineralised zones with a range of species including Prehnite with the zeolites Analcime and Natrolite. Galena and Blende - the ores of lead and zinc respectively - were also found in the same area. Lukis clearly had arrangements with local quarry owners and workers who notified him of interesting mineral finds. One crate in the collection contained a large number of Calcite specimens, all clearly from the same local site - possibly Hamley's Quarry in St Sampsons. Lukis' catalogue tells us that he received specimens from a wide circle of family, friends and correspondents. Thus from people with trading connections in the Baltic we find specimens of Scandinavian rocks and minerals, while his son John Walter being a mining engineer in France sent home lead minerals from Brittany. The fossil element of the collection is less well served in terms of evidence about its origins, though none of the specimens are local to Guernsey. While it includes a very representative selection of British and European fossils there is very little data about place of collection. The Guille-Allès collection includes skeletal remains of sub-fossil Mammoth from Siberia and a large number of geological specimens from the United States. The Guille-Allès Collection contains a similar range of minerals and European fossils to the Lukis Collection. One intriguing extra which was donated in 1889 by the Guernsey-born widow of Gilbert Hamilton (1803-1882) is a mineral collection with links to James Watt. "Hunterian Museum","The Hunterian has over 120,000 rock and mineral specimens in its collections, as well as around 1500 cut gemstones, and 70 meteorites. The mineral collections include several very important older collections including those of William Hunter (one of the few surviving 18th century mineral collections), Thomas Brown of Lanfine (Scottish and world minerals), Frederick Eck (South American, and world minerals), James 'Paraffin' Young (world-wide), Frank Rutley (world-wide; the author of Rutley's Elements of Mineralogy), and Alexander Thoms (mostly Scottish). Although the Hunterian Museum does not hold a vast collection of dinosaurs, it does have a number of quite important specimens. The Hunterian is actively involved in researching Scottish dinosaurs and has a number of key specimens in its collections. Scotland's first dinosaur footprint found in 1982, the first dinosaur track way and several dinosaur bones can be seen here. Specimens collected at the beginning of the 1800's by Gideon Mantel (which found their way into the Thomas Brown of Lanfine Collection) came to The Hunterian in the late 1800's. Gideon Mantel was one of the first dinosaur researchers and discoverers and The Hunterian has several pieces collected by him including Iguanodon and Megalosaurus teeth. The fossil collections are amongst the largest in the UK and were built up over the last 200 years from departmental research and teaching collections. A significant number of specimens have been added by donation from collectors around the world. The palaeontological collections at the Hunterian Museum include over 10,000 fossil plants, 10,000 vertebrates, 50,000 corals, 5,000 graptolites, 10,000 trilobites, 6,000 other arthropods, 40,000 molluscs, 10,000 microfossils, 5,000 brachiopods, 9,000 echinoderms, and several thousand type and figured fossils. "Joe Webb Peoples Museum of Natural History","The Joe Webb Peoples Museum of Natural History in Exley Science Center of Wesleyan University, is based in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences. The Museum is named after Professor Joe Webb Peoples (1908-2000), who was a strong advocate for the museum's and collections' role in teaching and science outreach. The Museum was established in 1970 as a second iteration of the Wesleyan Museum in Judd Hall (1871-1957). In 2017, a group of students and faculty initiated a project to revive the surviving collections by securing the collections, recovering lost data, cataloging the specimens and designing exhibitions.
The earliest natural history collections at Wesleyan University predate the university's founding in 1831. Many specimens were collected by Methodist missionaries that travelled abroad and during class field trips. Exchanges of material with local colleges and societies helped enrich the natural history collections. In 1871, the collections were moved to the newly-built Orange Judd Hall of Natural Sciences, named after its main benefactor. Judd's bequest of $65,000 formed a major part of the funding for Judd Hall, one of the nation's first buildings dedicated to the education in the natural sciences. The museum's first curator, ichthyologist George Brown Goode, later became the assistant secretary and director of the Smithsonian Institution in charge of the United States National Museum (1873-1896).",-72.6573091,41.5532529,"MUSEUM","https://jwp.wescreates.wesleyan.edu/",""

"Museum of Palaeontology","The paleontological collections of the Museum are the result of a series of collections, acquisitions and exchanges that have progressively favored the increase, in the course of almost two centuries, of the number of specimens that is currently estimated to be higher than 50,000 finds. Part of the current paleontological heritage dates back to the early 1800s when, following the establishment of the Real Mineralogical Museum, they were introduced into the Museum by Matteo Tondi and Arcangelo Scacchi, not only samples of minerals and rocks, but also samples of interest paleontological. Among the collections of fossils from the Royal Mineralogical Museum, there were those resulting from research conducted in Puglia (molluscs of the Pliocene clays of Gravina, collected by Scacchi), in Calabria, in various areas of southern Italy (molluscs on the island of Ischia and Mount Te Somma) and those purchased from renowned scientific institutions of the time. Among the vertebrates there were already three specimens of large marine reptiles (Ichthyosaurs) of the Württemberg Lias, purchased between 1841 and 1861. To these were added, starting from 1861, the collections of remarkable scientific value gathered by the numerous scholars who worked at the Institute of Geology and who in 1932 were sold to the Museum of Paleontology. The most important event, due to the increase in the museum heritage, was when, in the years between 1861 and 1873, the then Geology Museum was able to purchase the Collection of the naturalist Oronzio Gabriele Costa, represented by a precious collection of fossils from different locations in central and southern Italy. This reflects the fact that Cumbria is one of the richest mining areas in Britain. In particular, the Caldbeck Fells near Carlisle are renowned world-wide for their mineral wealth and have produced some of the finest mineral specimens ever found. The Museum collection holds a good range of Caldbeck, Pennine and West Cumbrian minerals, and many of these are of superb quality. Many of the minerals were collected during the last century and most of the mines are now closed. The fossil collection of around 6,000 specimens includes "Type" and "Figured" material. The collection contains material from the Professor Robert Harkness Collection. Other collections are those of Alexander Colvin, Lady Mabel Howard and M.H. Donald (including Jane Longstaff, née Donald). The fossil collection derives from a wide stratigraphic range of rocks from the Cambrian to Pleistocene. Most specimens are from the British Isles. The stratigraphy of Cumbria is well illustrated and includes fossils from one of the few Cumbrian exposures of the Lower Lias, near Carlisle. The bulk of the collection consists of Invertebrates and most groups are well represented. Vertebrate material includes fossil fish, reptile remains and footprints of Permian reptiles from the sandstones of the Eden Valley. Several of these footprints have been described and figured in publications on the geology of the area. Plant fossils are mainly from the Upper Carboniferous Coal Measures of West Cumbria with some specimens from the Permian A-bed of the Eden Shales (Hilton Plant Beds) near Appleby. The rock collection of just over 1,000 specimens contains a comprehensive range of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. The collection contains a good range of the many different types of rocks found in the Lake District. These include samples of Ordovician rocks from the Skiddaw, Eycott and Borrowdale Groups. Some of the material from Carrock Fell and the Skiddaw area was collected by the well known Lake District geologist, Clifton Ward. The collection also contains material from the Pennines, the Solway Basin and Southern Scotland. In the museum two dinosaurs feature in our geology section: a fossilised footprint of an Iguanodon and a model of a Juratyrant, an ancestor of Tyrannosaurus Rex. The fossilised bones of this ostrich-sized partly feathered carnivore were found in coastal rocks near Kimmeridge, south of Wareham. The remains are the only known find of this species, which lived about 150 million years ago. There are samples of rocks and fossils from the varied rock types of Purbeck. Many of these rocks outcrop on the coast (the Jurassic Coast) which forms part of the recently designated Dorset and Devon World Heritage Coast.
